Ken Block’s Gymkhana series is ready for electrical use. On Wednesday, the rally driver showed off his new Audi S1 Hoonitron, a dedicated EV designed by the carmaker specifically for Block. Audi hasn’t shared many details about the prototype, but as you can see in the photo above, it draws more than a few design hints from the legendary Sport Quattro S1 company. This is no accident; it was this car that inspired Block to pursue his career.
Block has promised to show what EV can do in a future video called “Elektrikhana”. It is unclear whether Travis Pastrana will join the tailor-made model . If you haven’t seen the Gymkhana event, they include some of the most you will see on the closed course. The S1 Hoonitron could significantly change the way Block handles the annual series.
EV’s current torque should help with the constant drift involved in Gymkhana courses. A lower center of gravity could also make bends much firmer. One thing we will have to see is whether the S1 Hoonitron will replicate the sound that the rev limiter produces in a traditional car with an internal combustion engine. After all, that sound is part of the fun of watching rally car driving.
