Google may already be creating another Chromecast with Google TV

Google tends to release new Chromecast models only moderately (you can still buy a year-old 1080p unit today), but it can be more aggressive with Google TV model. 9to5Google sources claim that the company is already developing a new Chromecast with Google TV. Documentation and code disclosure allegedly revealed the code name “Boreal”, doc 9 to 5 realized that the media hub for Android TV will be launched later in 2022.

The alleged leak does not mention specifications, although a newer processing power with wider video support could be needed. XDA and others have heard Android TV will require support for the AV1 video format after March 31, and this is noticeably absent on the existing Chromecast with Google TV. The company could also take the opportunity to address common complaints, such as a modest warehouse.

Provided the leak is correct, the question arises as to whether this is a direct replacement for an existing Chromecast or a separate higher-power model. Since the existing Chromecast already supports 4K HDR, it seems a more likely replacement. Clearly, any changes would be significant enough to guarantee a new internal nickname – Google doesn’t usually give names for minor revisions.
