Did you remember that there are two versions Pinocchio should we be honored in 2022? One of them comes from Disney, obviously, but the other comes from a acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro . The director of the recently released Alley of nightmares and The shape of the water has a new look at classic character for Netflix which is sure to attract attention when it comes out next year, that’s for sure.
While for Inverse, he talked about his long-term relationship with actor del Toro Ron Perlman talked about his participation in the upcoming stop motion film. Back in 2020, we learned that this new interpretation of the character (played by newcomer Gregory Mann) will be set in the 1930s Italy during the time of the Benites Mussolini’s fascism, and Perlman has given some information on what this new setting will entail. “The arrogance of the film is that Pinocchio is a perfect soldier because he is not a man. So he never questions orders. He has no fears. He is invulnerable. ”
Pinocchio as a child soldier sounds pretty wild, and Perlman added that his character, Mangiafuoco, will serve as a dark mentor, like the evil Jiminy Cricket. “I’m playing one of the city’s fathers who is a pro-fascist and who’s trying to manipulate Pinocchio to represent the cause.” Manipulating people is Perlman’s role it is not foreign, so it’s perfect casting. Since the future real boy is invulnerable and “all that a perfect soldier must be,” of course the fascists would like him to be on their side to help keep the regime under control.
Given how Perlman there is no stranger play guys who manipulate people, you can call it a pretty perfect casting. How often del Toro’s work explores perverted family dynamics and complicated relationships, plus his penchant for making films throughout real human history, new Pinocchio sounds like it will be worth a look. (At the very least, more than that Disney remake, which is worth a lot.) But of course, both films will only serve as an appetizer to a real hot edition: that like a soul game where you are Pinocchio with the hand of a flamethrower.
Guillermo del Tora Pinocchio will arrive on Netflix in late 2022.
