Webster and Tyler selected for the British Olympic weightlifting team

The GB team announced it British weightlifters Rebekah Tyler and Sonny Webster will make their debut at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Teen sensation Rebecca Tiler is set to compete in the women’s -69kg category, while Sonny Webster, 22, will wave the UK flag in the men’s -94kg category.

The 17-year-old Tiller from Keighley, West Yorkshire, is set to be one of the youngest athletes for the GB team at this year’s Olympics. She will become the current British champion, as she has set two British records at the last British Championships. She is also a gold medalist at the Commonwealth Youth Games. Sonny Webster is also the current British champion and finished fifth at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, as well as the U23 British record holder.

About her choice for Rio, Tyler commented:

“I am so excited and honored to be representing the GB team in Rio this summer; it’s a dream come true and something I’ve wanted since I played sports. The next few weeks of preparation are so important and I am 100% focused on being in the best possible condition on the way to Rio. ”

Bristolian Webster also commented:

“The Olympics are undoubtedly the biggest stage for this sport. I trained well and my recent appearance at the British Championships gave me a fantastic platform to upgrade; The next few weeks of preparation are absolute crucial. ”

Former wife favorite Zoe Smith was pulled out of the run with a dislocated shoulder at the British Championships last month. Smith expressed her disappointmentnot to represent Team GB at the Games in a post on Instagram earlier today, but wished Tyler all the best for the summer Games.

Tommy Yule, director of performance at British Weightlifting, expressed pride in choosing Tyler and Webster. In a statement, Yule praised their recent progress and personal efforts at recent national and international competitions, noting that all the coaches ’focus will now be on giving their best chance of a good performance in Rio.

The United Kingdom won seven medals in Olympic weightlifting – one gold, three silver and three bronze. Latest was won by David Mercer in Los Angeles in 1984.

The 2016 Olympic Games will be held from August 5 to 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
